Tūhourangi Whenua

Kōrero about our whenua

Visit Te Pūtake o Tawa

Located 10 minutes from Rotorua CBD, you can find Te Pūtake o Tawa on the way to lakes Tikitapu and Tarawera, on the right-hand side just after the turnoff to Okareka.

A great place to begin your hīkoi or cycle into the ngahere with a mountain bike from Mountainbike Rotorua. Or even a visit to our pou whakairo and mahi toi that adorn the site and tell stories of significant Tūhourangi ancestors will be well worth the trip!

Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Waimangu is the beating heart of the world’s youngest geothermal valley, is found on Tūhourangi whenua, and owned in part by Tūhourangi Tribal Authority.

This means Tūhourangi uri can visit Waimangu Volcanic Valley free-of-charge.

We immerse visitors in the stories of the Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption, its people, and the resulting dramatic landscape changes that created this amazing part of the world.

If you or your whānau would like to visit our tupuna whenua at Waimangu, please contact Ngarepo to book.
